Have you considered Geothermal Heating & Cooling as opposed to standard heat pumps/air conditioning systems? Also called GeoExchange, this system makes use of the near constant temperatures in the ground. In the winter, heat is drawn from the ground into the system to keep you toasty warm. And in the summer (Alabama and Georgia summers too), it sheds heat from the house and draws in the cool from the ground.
A GeoExchange system can radically lower your electric bill.
Make sure to check out the tax credits allowed when you install one of these systems - 30% of expenses, including installation and labor. Best of all? There's no upper limit.
